TRA grants mobile TV licence to consortium

Abu Dhabi: The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has finished evaluating a bid to acquire a broadcast mobile TV service licence by the Emirates Mobile Television Corporation consortium.

The consortium has selected DVB-H technology, a feature in many mobile phones. The TRA has agreed to grant the licence to the consortium to provide mobile TV broadcasting services for 10 years with an acquisition fee of Dh17 million.

The royalty will also be applied to the company. The consortium will also have exclusivity to provide the service for five years.

“By this licence, the TRA succeeded in bringing together the main players in media and telecommunication sectors to form a partnership to provide such services in the country, the UAE companies of the two sectors considered to be the leaders in the region,” Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, TRA director general of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, said.

The consortium will provide services to Etisalat and du which will offer a variety of exclusive mobile TV packages to their subscribers.
